Moknine is a city of the Tunisian Sahel located halfway between Monastir (20 kilometers in north) and Mahdia. Its name would come from the Berber word makna meaning “hill”. Moknine is an important economic center of the Tunisian Sahel thanks to its various industries, although that of the textile is declining. The city is also considered by its Berber costumes and its potteries. One finds there also many vestiges Byzantine.
